Hey guys, in this article I will discuss about the Greatswords of Westeros(mostly the ones made of Valyrian steel).

The Greatswords are the largest type of swords, considerably longer and heavier than a bastard sword or a longsword. Most of them are more than 5 feet tall and are held by two hands(and then we have The Mountain swinging a 5 feet long sword with one hand).

So let’s start with the most famous of all the Greatswords: Ice

Ice was the two-handed Greatsword of House Stark. It had been in their possession for more than four centuries. Made of Valyrian steel(i.e. forged from magic and the steel of Valyria), Ice never needed to be sharpened.

Eddard never used Ice for fighting purposes, it was more like a ceremonial sword used only for display or when passing a judgement(executing someone). This may be because Ned never learnt to fight with a greatsword, coz the Ice was supposed to be inherited by the eldest son of the house and as such Brandon Stark would have been trained to fight with Ice but after he died the sword was passed onto Ned and became a mere sword for show.

Afterwards, when the sword came in the hands of Lannisters they forged two blades out of the Ice:Widow’s Wail and Oathkeeper.

“The blade was Valyrian steel, spell-forged and dark as smoke.”
